Summary - AU/AU Jack is a trainee architect at a company owned by Mitchell Del Mar and his cousin Ennis. A light hearted office romance - nothing too angsty or dark in this establishment.
Last chapter recap - Jack had his first (uneventful) late night working with Ennis, Scott is thrown into a relationship dilemma when his girlfriend proposes, and Jack sees Ennis with the sexy and mysterious tattooed man...

The rest of the weekend seemed to drag by for Jack—not that he saw much of Saturday, since he and Scott had stayed out way too late Friday night and ended up sleeping for most of the following day. On Sunday Scott went to visit his mom, so Jack wandered around town on his own and went for a run. He wasn’t sure if he was looking forward to seeing Ennis at work on Monday or not. Part of him always wanted to see Ennis, but now that he had new information, personal information that Ennis clearly didn’t want made public, Jack wasn’t sure if he would be able to act normally. He was a terrible liar and knew that he wouldn’t be able to hide the truth if questioned too closely. He was also as curious as hell about the bald tattooed guy.
Monday morning saw Jack and Scott slink into their office, neither of them in a particularly good mood.
“Coffee?” Jack asked as they shrugged off their coats.
“Yeah, that would be awesome, thanks,” Scott replied, flicking on his computer.
Jack made his way to the small kitchen area set aside for employees. He started to fill up the coffee machine with new granules and grabbed two mugs out of the cupboard.
“You making fresh stuff?”
Jack jumped and swung around, mugs in hand, to see Ennis in the doorway dressed in dark jeans and a brown polo shirt. Jack seemed to be seeing Ennis lurking in doorways a lot recently. “Er, yeah,” he replied, “you want one?”
“Thanks,” Ennis nodded. “Will you bring it through?”
“Sure.” Jack turned around and reached back into the cupboard. He toyed briefly with the idea of choosing the pink confetti mug, or the one declaring “I like it slow and hard” but decided that neither would be a wise career move. Plain white it was.
He assumed Ennis had gone back to his office, so he was a bit surprised when he lingered in the doorway, watching Jack. Jack felt a bit awkward, not knowing what to say, wanting to keep Ennis there, but also wanting to get as far away as possible.
“Everything ok?”
Jack jumped again as Ennis spoke.
“Uh… yeah. Why?”
“You seem… nervous.” Ennis ran his hand over his short hair.
“Me? No, I’m fine,” Jack fiddled with the coffee machine, but felt his cheeks flush a little.
Ennis paused for a moment. “Ok. Just wanted to make sure. If you’re having any problems, you can always speak to me—or Mitch.”
Jack nodded quickly. “Sure, thanks, will do.”
Ennis eyed him in concern, then shrugged and pushed away from the door, returning to his office.
Jack closed his eyes and let out a long sigh. Why was he so damn readable? Even Ennis could tell he was hiding something. Coffees finished, Jack dropped off his and Scott’s before returning to get Ennis’. He took a moment to try and appear as neutral as possible, then knocked on Ennis’ door, pushing it open when he heard Ennis reply.
Jack gaped and nearly dropped the coffee in shock. Holy fuck, Ennis was half naked. Actually, that wasn’t entirely true, he did have pants and a new white shirt on, but the shirt was completely unbuttoned, revealing a gorgeously toned stomach and chest.
“Thanks, Jack,” Ennis said as he leaned down into a drawer to pick up a tie. “Sorry, meeting with lawyers in ten minutes,” he added as if to explain his attire, or lack of. He flipped the tie over a shoulder and started to do up the buttons of his shirt.
Jack cleared his throat, trying not to stare at all the exposed flesh on display. “Uh… fine… no problem,” he stuttered. He felt his cheeks flushing again. So much for trying to appear all calm and collected. His hand trembled slightly as he put the mug of coffee down on the desk. Unfortunately, this put him right in the line of Ennis’ dick. His couldn’t control his eyes as they lingered on the bulge in the dark fabric.
Ennis paused in his buttoning and looked at Jack. “Are you sure you’re ok?”
Jack tore his eyes away. Fuck. “Yeah, I’m good… gotta go. Thanks. Bye,” and Jack fled the room, heading straight to the bathrooms.
Jack locked himself in a stall and sat with his head in his hands. Why was he such a moron? He was acting like some naïve virgin, and nothing could be further from the truth. Not like he hadn’t seen dozens of naked torsos or dicks before. Jack reasoned that he’d never crushed on an older guy before, never someone who wasn’t openly gay, certainly never a boss and definitely never one with a body quite as delicious as Ennis’. All of the above made him feel vulnerable and off-balance. It all seemed a little crazy, though, not like anything was ever going to come of it. No way would Ennis be interested in someone like him. Ennis probably had hundreds of hot guys queuing up for him—right behind Mr. Bald Tattoo Dude.
Accepting that he couldn’t stay in the stall all day, Jack went to the sinks and splashed cold water on his face. He looked at his reflection in the mirror: eyes wide, cheeks red. Get a grip; he’s just another guy, he told himself sternly. Blotting his face dry with paper towels, Jack squared his shoulders and took a deep breath. He headed back into his office, trying to banish all thoughts of Ennis from his head.
****
Jack and Scott didn’t have time to do much more than grab a couple of sandwiches for lunch before returning to the office and the daily grind. It seemed like they had effectively swapped bosses for the time being, Jack now working with Ennis and Scott with Mitchell.
Scott definitely had the easier swap. Mitchell may have been a few years older than Ennis, but he was certainly much more laid-back. He was married with two baby girls and was happy to chat about his home life with anyone who expressed an interest. Jack liked him a lot. Everyone did.
Ennis kept Jack frantically busy all day, writing up notes, drawing and re-drawing various sketches, researching building regulations and legal requirements. It seemed like every time Jack turned to his computer screen there was another email from Ennis, attaching another document to look at or detailing further instructions. He didn’t see him in person after the shirt incident, though.
By late afternoon Jack was in need of a serious caffeine boost and so he found himself making coffee in the kitchen again.
“Jack! Can you get me one?” Jack had a strange sense of déjà vu as he turned and saw the tall, lean figure of Mitchell Del Mar in the doorway.
“Sure. Black with one sugar?”
Mitchell clicked his tongue and pointed at Jack with a wink. “Got it in one. I knew we employed you for a reason,” he grinned, grey eyes sparkling and shoved his hands in the pockets of his pants. “Everything ok, Jack? Ennis not working you too hard?”
Jack smiled and shook his head; what was it with these Del Mars today? “No, it’s fine. Everything’s fine, thanks.”
“Good. Can’t have him upsetting the staff. I know he can crack the whip, but he won’t push you if he doesn’t think you can handle it.”
Jack nodded. “Yeah, I get that.”
Mitchell shifted slightly to let Candy enter the kitchen. She smiled briefly at Mitchell and ignored Jack, opening the fridge to pull out what looked like a rather nasty green smoothie.
Mitchell walked towards Jack and clapped him on the shoulder. “I know you can handle it. I think you can handle more than you give yourself credit for, Jack.” Mitchell’s eyes were serious for a moment, “I mean it. I know this isn’t the big commercial stuff that you lust after, but it it’s still tough. You deal with pressure well, seem to thrive on it. I think you and Ennis will work well together. It’ll be hard but I have faith that this project will be a flyer.”
Jack’s heart lifted at the praise. “I hope so. I don’t want to let anyone down.”
The fridge door closed with a slightly louder bang than was necessary.
“You won’t. But if you have any problems, come and talk to me.” Mitchell leaned across Jack to grab a couple of cookies from a jar on the counter, biting one in half and dropping crumbs on the floor which Candy noted with a tut. “Now, where’s that coffee?”
****
It turned out to be another late night working with Ennis, which didn’t do much to calm Jack’s nerves. At least most of the time he was in his own office and wasn’t forced to be in Ennis’ lair for hours on end.
He had just begun to relax a little when his phone rang. “Jack, can you bring the latest drafts in here please.”
Jack made his way to Ennis’ office, papers clutched to his chest.
Ennis was sitting on his desk, hip propped on the edge. He looked up as Jack came in. “Thanks. Pass them here.”
Jack handed over the papers and stood nervously, chewing his thumbnail as Ennis flicked through the drawings. Despite his best efforts, he couldn’t help his eyes from roaming down Ennis’s thighs; the right one splayed out on the desk as Ennis balanced the file on it. Jack’s eyes snagged on the fabric at Ennis’ crotch and lingered dangerously, trying to determine any kind of outline.
Ennis cleared his throat and Jack quickly turned away, but knew at once that he had been caught staring at his boss’s dick. Again. Twice in one day. Fuck. He had to say something quickly.
“I saw you,” Jack blurted out.
“What?” Ennis looked puzzled.
Jack screwed his eyes shut with embarrassment. Way to go, Casanova.
“What do you mean, you saw me?” Ennis said and frowned.
Jack studied his shoes. “Um, the other night. Outside the gym,” he mumbled, stubbing his foot on the corner of the desk.
“Right.” Ennis stood up and put his hands in his pockets.
Jack tried not to notice that it pulled the fabric over Ennis’ crotch even tighter.
Ennis walked over to the door and closed it quietly, turning back to face Jack. “So, what exactly did you see?”
“Nothing,” Jack said, shaking his head, “nothing at all.”
“So why mention it?” Ennis narrowed his eyes slightly and Jack started to feel nervous. He couldn’t believe he had let his mouth run away with him.
“I don’t know. It was nothing,” Jack repeated.
“Nothing?” Ennis prowled across his office and Jack sucked in a wary breath.
“Nothing.”
Ennis stopped right in front of Jack and watched him closely. “Did you see anyone else?”
Jack paused and debated lying, but he thought Ennis had him figured out anyway. He kicked his foot against the desk again. “Er… maybe.”
“I see,” Ennis said quietly.
“Um… is that all? Can I go now?” Jack felt sweat start to break out on his forehead. A combination of nerves and the close proximity of his boss was playing havoc with his blood pressure.
“Did you mention this to anyone?”
“No!” Jack said quickly, shaking his head. “And I won’t, I promise. None of my business.”
“That’s right.” Ennis ran a hand over his hair as his eyes held Jack’s. “I prefer to keep my private life private. Understood?”
“Sure.” Jack licked his lips and noticed Ennis’ eyes flick down to watch the movement, lingering there for just a fraction too long. Jack knew he was pushing his luck, but he had to ask the question, “Are you seeing him, that guy?”
Ennis’ eyes narrowed again and he shifted a little closer to Jack. “I thought that was none of your business,” he grated.
Jack raised his hands and backed away slightly. “Sorry, you’re right. Stupid question. Right. We’re done here? Ok. Well… I’ll just… go.” He retreated to the door and yanked it open. “’Night. See you tomorrow… er... bye.”
Ennis didn’t reply and Jack beat a hasty retreat down the corridor and out of the office, cursing his stupidity and curiosity. He also wondered if he’d still have a job in the morning.

I am drooling, literally. Anna you have GOT to provide us with a picture.
I simply LOVE this scene! Of course usually people change their clothes in the bathroom, so Ennis did this deliberately. I remember how Jack unbuttoned his shirt to seduce Ennis, and now it is Ennis' turn to return the favor. Two can play the game, isn't it?
Re: I LOVE the shirt game
Date: 2010-11-25 12:08 am (UTC)Of course people normally change in the bathroom. I definitely think Ennis is playing with Jack a little... returning the favour as you say!

Oh, man, I can so relate to blurting stuff out unintentionally, lol. But you know, Jack's only 22 and I think his awkwardness around Ennis is realistic and understandable for a lot of reasons. It's nice to see that both Mitchell and Ennis have noticed and appreciate Jack's talent and hard work :) So, Ennis knows that Jack saw him and bald tattooed guy, now what? This is a lot of fun and we can all use fun! Thanks :)

Date: 2010-11-24 08:15 am (UTC)I feel bad for Jack but I want to thank him for having asked Ennis what everybody wants to know: is he seeing that guy?
I'm glad that Mitch praised Jack's work, I think he needed to hear it.
I liked Ennis's reaction at Jack's question: calm and asking to keep his life private but I'm sure that he will have many thoughts at home. For sure he was looking at Jack and this is a good thing! Can't wait for more.

Date: 2010-11-25 01:17 am (UTC)Yes, I think Ennis is definitely looking at Jack and isn't being as professional as perhaps he should be. Jack is good at his job and both Ennis and Mitch know this - but it's always nice to be told!
The tattooed guy appears again in the story, so we'll find out more about him then :)
Thanks so much for the comments and a big hug right back!

Date: 2010-11-24 09:29 am (UTC)With Jack being so awkward, nervous and somewhat intruding I can´t see at the moment how they ever will get together, but I have totally faith in your excellent story telling and I can´t wait to see what will happen next.
Have a nice day and thank you so much for this wonderful and thouroughly entertaining story,

Date: 2010-11-25 01:22 am (UTC)It's funny you say, but at this point in writing the story I also had some concerns about how I was going to get them together - but you'll be glad to know that I managed to work it out for them :))
